Pulmonology

Signs and Symptoms

Pulmonology symptoms are a range of signs that may mean there is a problem with the respiratory system. They may indicate a disorder which is affecting the lungs, airways or the muscles that help us to breathe, and can vary in severity and frequency.

In general, pulmonology disease symptoms which may indicate a respiratory infection, include:

  • Body aches
  • Congestion
  • Cough (dry or wet)
  • Fever
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat

Certain respiratory infections, such as a cold, can quickly develop into serious respiratory concerns like pneumonia, particularly in people considered at-risk (the elderly, the very young, or those with pre-existing medical conditions).

The symptoms of a serious respiratory infection are often very similar to those of a common cold initially. However, they can quickly progress, and complications can develop. Complications to look out for include:

Shortness of breath

Infections of the respiratory system may interfere with your breathing, and it may feel like breathing is more difficult. This is called dyspnea. Your breathing may become shallow, rapid or you may feel like you are struggling to catch your breath. You may have trouble breathing during exertion (even during simple activities such as running up the stairs) or when at rest. Never ignore a shortness of breath as it may increase the risk of respiratory failure, due to increased levels of carbon dioxide in the blood.

Persistent coughing

If a cough has lasted more than a couple of weeks, it may be the sign of an infection such as bronchitis or pneumonia or indicate asthma or an allergy. A persistent cough may be wet and produce phlegm or be a dry cough. The cough may be accompanied by chest discomfort.

Wheezing

A wheeze is a high-pitched whistling sound when you breathe. It is usually caused by the airways in your respiratory system narrowing as a result of an infection, inflammation or asthma.

Chest pain or tightness

A tightness, pain, pressure or discomfort in the chest can indicate an acute respiratory infection. Inflammation of the airways can be caused by infections like bronchitis, as well as more serious infections like flu or pneumonia. These types of infections can be life-threatening to very old, very young, or at-risk people.

Fatigue

Fatigue is different from tiredness – it is an excessive tiredness or lack of energy, often as a result of increased effort required for breathing.

High fever

A fever over 38C (103F) is considered high and can be a sign of a serious respiratory infection.

Cyanosis

Cyanosis is a warning sign that there is not enough oxygen in the blood. It is characterized by a bluish discoloration of the lips, face, or extremities.

Snoring or Sleep Disturbances

Respiratory issues, such as sleep apnea, may manifest as loud snoring or disruptions in normal sleep patterns.

Never ignore the signs of a respiratory infection

If you experience any of the warning signs of a pulmonary disorder, or notice any changes in your breathing, always see a pulmonology specialist.
