Blood tests

Computed tomography (CT) scan
A CT scan uses a series of X-rays which produce detailed, 3D images. The scan allows doctors to see any nodules, growths or masses on a particular gland.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
An MRI uses large magnets and radio waves to produce detailed images of certain glands, allowing doctors to view any abnormal growths.
Positron emission tomography (PET)
A PET scan involves the injection of a safe, radioactive substance which shows up on a scan in areas of chemical activity. The scan can indicate an abnormal growth in endocrine cells near a gland or accurately locate a tumor in/near an endocrine gland.
Ultrasound
An ultrasound scan uses sound waves to create images inside the body. The diagnostic scan can help doctors to diagnose growths, nodules or enlarged endocrine glands.
Fine needle aspiration biopsy
A fine needle aspiration is a type of biopsy and involves inserting a very small needle into the area of concern to obtain a sample of cells. The cells are then examined under a microscope and can confirm a diagnosis or guide treatment.
Urinalysis
This is a test of urine which can detect and measure a number of different compounds including the levels of endocrine hormones. Urine tests are also used to evaluate how the body is responding to treatment.
