Causes of endocrine disorders

Endocrine disorders are usually the result of a hormone imbalance. This is due to an endocrine gland producing too little or too much of a hormone. The endocrine’s feedback system usually controls the balance of hormones within the bloodstream, but if there is a problem with the system, the hormones become unbalanced. This increase or decrease in endocrine hormone levels may be caused by:

  • Disease
  • Genetic disorders
  • Infections
  • Injury to an endocrine gland
  • Problems with the endocrine’s feedback system
  • Tumor or nodule on an endocrine gland

Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the most commonly diagnosed endocrine disorders in the region. It is characterized by either not enough insulin being produced, or the insulin not working properly, leading to too much sugar in the blood. Type 1 diabetes is believed to be caused by genetics and certain environmental factors, causing the body’s immune system to attack insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. Type 2 diabetes can be caused by several factors, including genetics and lifestyle factors such as obesity and physical inactivity. Symptoms of diabetes include:

  • Blurred vision
  • Feeling thirsty all the time
  • Feeling very tired
  • Itching in the genital area
  • Increased urination, especially at night
  • Weight loss (more common in type 1 diabetes)
