Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosing Gastrointestinal Disorders

Our team of experts have decades of experience in gastrointestinal screening and diagnosis. Using the very latest, minimally invasive techniques and endoscopic procedures, our gastroenterologists provide fast and accurate results for a range of gastrointestinal conditions.

To diagnose a gastrointestinal condition, our specialists will first discuss your symptoms and medical history with you in detail and then perform a physical examination. To confirm a diagnosis, tests may be necessary, which may include:

  • Laboratory tests, including stool culture and fecal occult blood test
  • Medical imaging tests:
  • Barium meal or barium swallow
  • Colorectal transit study
  • Computed tomography (CT) scan
  • Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan
  • Oropharyngeal motility (swallowing) study
  • Radioisotope gastric-emptying scan
  • Ultrasound
  • Endoscopic procedures:
  • Colonoscopy
  • Endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR)
  • Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP)
  • Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)
  • Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (an upper endoscopy)
  • Deep enteroscopy
  • Sigmoidoscopy.

Treating Gastrointestinal Disorders

Treatment of gastrointestinal disorders will depend on an individual’s symptoms and diagnosis. Treatment options may include lifestyle management, nutritional support, gastrointestinal medications, endoscopic procedures or surgery.

If you have one the more common gastrointestinal disorders, your doctor may first recommend managing the condition at home with diet and lifestyle changes. These include:

Constipation:

A common functional gastrointestinal condition in which passing stools is difficult or irregular. As it causes you to strain, constipation can lead to other problems such as hemorrhoids. Treatment can include:

  • Increasing the amount of fiber you eat
  • Drinking more water
  • Using the toilet whenever you have the urge
  • Exercising more

If the above at-home treatments don’t offer relief, then a laxative may be prescribed.

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS):

A functional condition that causes the muscles of the intestine to contract more or less than they should. It leads to pain and cramps, bloating and changes in bowel habits. The condition can be managed by:

  • Limiting foods that you know trigger your IBS
  • Avoiding caffeine
  • Reducing stress and getting enough sleep
  • Increasing fiber and water intake

Hemorrhoids:

A structural condition that is caused by pressure, which leads to swollen veins. The pressure can come from straining, pregnancy, or frequent diarrhea. Hemorrhoids can be internal, on the inside of the opening of the anus, or prolapse and become external. External hemorrhoids can burst and form a blood clot. This painful condition is called ‘piles’.

Treatment for hemorrhoids can include:

  • Improving diet to reduce diarrhea or constipation (see above)
  • Avoiding straining
  • Always using the toilet when you have the urge.

In severe cases, doctors may use bands which remove the blood vessels or remove them surgically.

Anal fissures:

A structural condition in which the lining of the anus splits and exposes the muscles which controls the movement of stools out of the body. It is caused by passing hard or watery stools. It is very painful as the muscle becomes irritated when exposed to the stool. Treatment at home includes:

  • Improving diet and fiber intake
  • Taking pain relief
  • Taking baths to relieve the pain

If treatment at home is unsuccessful, surgery may be required to repair the split.
