Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosing neurological disorders
Our neurologists are expertly trained in nervous system screening and assessment. We use the latest technologies, including state-of-the-art imaging and diagnostic procedures, to ensure a swift and accurate diagnosis. This allows intervention or treatment to begin promptly, helping you to return to normal life as soon as possible.
The diagnostic tests performed will depend on the symptoms you are experiencing. During the initial consultation with our neurologist, they will perform a physical examination and take a detailed medical and family history, discussing your symptoms in detail. Diagnostic tests might include:
- Computed tomography (CT): A CT scan uses a series of X-rays to produce 3D images. The detailed scans allow doctors to detect many neurological conditions such as epilepsy, brain damage, tumors, or cysts.
- Doppler ultrasound: Using sound waves to create images, an ultrasound allows doctors to see abnormalities on various parts of the nervous system.
- Electroencephalogram (EEG): An EEG is a test used to measure brain activity. Sensors are attached to the head which monitor the brain’s electrical signals. It is used to detect brain tumors or inflammation of the brain or spinal cord.
- Electromyogram (EMG): An EMG measures the response of our muscles or the electrical activity in response to nerve stimulation of the muscle. Needles are inserted into the muscle and electrodes detect activity when at rest or contracted. An EMG is used to detect a range of neuromuscular disorders.
- Lumbar puncture: This involves taking a sample of cerebrospinal fluid using a very fine needle. This can confirm the presence of cerebral hemorrhaging or bleeding.
- Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): An MRI uses radio waves and large magnets to produce detailed images of the brain, spinal cord or nerves which may have been affected by a neurological condition.
- Sleep studies: A sleep study is a way of monitoring and recording bodily functions while we sleep. By studying brain activity, breathing, heart rate and eye movement, the tests can help to diagnose sleep disorders such as narcolepsy, sleep apnea and restless leg syndrome.
Treating neurological disorders
A wide range of treatments are available for neurological disorders. Once diagnostic tests have confirmed a diagnosis, our experienced neurologists will work closely with you to develop the most appropriate and effective treatment plan.
Treatment usually involves some form of neurorehabilitation. This includes services such as physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, and rehabilitation psychology. The aim of neurorehabilitation is to restore function as much as possible, and improve strength and mobility, to increase independence and improve daily life.
Other treatment options include medication to alleviate symptoms or in severe cases, surgery.
