Arterial disease

Arterial disease is usually caused by a build-up of fatty plaques within the arteries. This is called atherosclerosis and leads to a narrowing of the artery which restricts blood flow. Risk factors for artery disease include hypertension and various lifestyle factors such as poor diet, stress, smoking, obesity, and lack of exercise.

Types of arterial disease include

  • Coronary artery disease: Plaque builds up in the coronary arteries which supply blood to the heart. There is a genetic risk of developing coronary artery disease.
  • Peripheral artery disease: This is when the blood vessels to the legs are affected.
  • Renal artery disease: Affects the vessels carrying blood to the kidneys.

High blood pressure

Also called hypertension, high blood pressure means that the pressure in the blood vessels is too high. It is usually caused by lifestyle factors, such as being overweight, having a poor diet, lack of exercise, or smoking. If it isn’t treated, high blood pressure becomes a serious health concern.

High cholesterol

Cholesterol is a fatty substance in our blood. Too much cholesterol, usually coming from the foods we eat, can block our blood vessels and lead to heart problems or stroke. Eating foods high in fat, particularly animal foods such as red meat and dairy, being overweight, smoking and not exercising enough, can all increase the risk of having high cholesterol.

Heart failure

Heart failure is when the heart is unable to pump blood around the body properly. This is because it has become too stiff or too weak. It doesn’t mean the heart has stopped working, but it needs help to function properly. Heart disease is a long-term condition that usually gets worse over time. It is often caused by other conditions affecting the heart, including coronary heart disease, heart rhythm problems, heart disease, or high blood pressure.

Myocarditis

Often caused by a viral infection, myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle (called the myocardium) and reduces blood flow. In severe cases, myocarditis can weaken the myocardium so much that the heart cannot pump enough blood around the body and dangerous clots form, which can lead to heart attack or stroke.

Heart rhythm abnormalities

Also called arrhythmia, heart rhythm problems are common. The most common type is atrial fibrillation, in which the heart beats too fast and irregularly.

Other types of arrhythmias include

  • Bradycardia: The heart beats slower than normal.
  • Heart block: A slower than normal heartbeat which can cause people to faint.
  • Supraventricular tachycardia: Episodes of a fast heart rate are experienced when at rest.
  • Ventricular fibrillation: A rare yet serious abnormal rhythm that can lead to loss of consciousness or death if not immediately treated.

Heart valve disease

One of the most common heart valve diseases, called stenosis, is caused by a narrowing or stiffening of the valve. The valve cannot fully open or close properly, and not enough blood can flow through it. Other types of heart valve disease include regurgitation, prolapse and atresia. Some heart valve diseases are congenital, meaning you are born with them, while others may be caused by age-related changes to the heart, infection or other heart conditions.

Aortic conditions and diseases

The aorta is the main artery which carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the stomach. Aortic diseases include things such as

  • Aortic aneurysm: A bulge forms in the aorta’s wall. This is caused by a hardening of the artery, certain medical conditions or injury.
  • Aortic valve disease or aortic stenosis: The valve between the heart’s lower left chamber and the aorta doesn’t fully open. It may be present at birth, or be caused by high blood pressure, age-related changes to your heart, infection, or injury.
