Prevention Of Gastrointestinal Disorders

It is possible to prevent or manage many gastrointestinal disorders by making lifestyle changes. Prevention strategies for some of the most common conditions include:

  • Constipation: Include more roughage or fiber in your diet and drink plenty of liquids. Always use the toilet when you have the urge.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): IBS can sometimes be prevented by avoiding foods known to trigger the condition and avoiding caffeine. Managing stress can also help to prevent or manage the condition.
  • Hemorrhoids: Prevent hemorrhoids by avoiding constipation. Never strain when your bowels are moving and never avoid the urge to go.
  • Anal fissures: Prevent anal fissures by improving digestive health. Caused by very hard stools, increasing fiber and fluid intake can help.

Some gastrointestinal diseases, such as colorectal polyps and cancer, cannot be prevented. Therefore, screening (called a colonoscopy) is recommended for everyone from the age of 45. Screening should take place earlier if you have a family history of colorectal cancer or polyps.

If you have symptoms of colorectal cancer, always talk to your doctor as soon as possible. The most common symptoms or colon cancer include:

  • Abdominal pain that is new
  • Anemia
  • Blood in your stool (either bright red or dark red)
  • Change in your normal bowel habits
  • Feeling that you have not emptied your bowel after going to the toilet
  • Narrow stools
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Unexplained weight loss.
