Our Endocrine department offers a comprehensive range of treatments for many endocrine conditions, led by some of the region’s most experienced endocrinologists.
Hormonal problems and endocrine disorders commonly treated in our state-of-the-art facilities include:
Our adrenal glands produce hormones which regulate blood sugar levels, the balance of salt, water and potassium in our body, and our response to stress. Treatment will depend on the exact diagnosis but may involve hormone replacement medication if levels are too low. Medication which blocks production of the adrenal gland hormones can be given if levels are too high. If an abnormal growth is diagnosed, surgery may be needed.
Diabetes
We work with endocrinologists from our Diabetology clinic to offer ongoing diabetes management and treatment plans for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and a range of conditions associated with the disease, including:
Please see here for more information on managing and treating diabetes.
Obesity
An imbalance of certain hormones can cause obesity. This includes an under-active thyroid gland which causes hypothyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome, which leads to high levels of the hormone cortisol. We work closely with our Weight Management department to determine the best treatment plan for patients living with obesity.
Reproductive endocrinology
We treat a range of endocrine disorders linked to the reproductive system, including erectile dysfunction, testosterone deficiency and hypogonadism. Once the source of the problem has been identified, treatment may involve medication, procedures or surgery.
Thyroid disorders
An underactive thyroid is usually treated with daily hormone replacement medication. An overactive thyroid is treated with medication or radioactive iodine treatment, a type of radiotherapy which destroys thyroid gland cells to reduce the amount of hormones produced. Thyroid eye disease is an autoimmune disease which affects the eye’s muscles, causing them to become inflamed and the eye to bulge. Treatment may involve eye drops, steroids or orbital radiotherapy. If thyroid nodules are diagnosed, we offer fine needle aspiration cytology and follow-up to patients who have previously been diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
