Preventive Nutrition

Preventive nutrition, also known as proactive nutrition, focuses on adopting dietary adjustments that may prevent certain diseases or conditions from developing in the future.

This approach involves making informed choices such as opting for healthier foods, limiting the consumption of certain items and embracing a balanced diet to enhance overall health and wellbeing. By doing so, individuals not only promote their general wellness but also reduce the risk of developing chronic illnesses.

There is significant scientific evidence that highlights the role that our diet plays in many diseases, such as:

  • Blood disorders (anemia)
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Degenerative bone diseases (osteoporosis)
  • Digestive problems (including heartburn, constipation, and food intolerances)
  • Hypertension
  • Some types of cancer (mouth and throat, bowel, stomach, and lung)
  • Type 2 diabetes.

These conditions are among the leading causes of death globally, yet the onset of many could be prevented by adopting healthier nutritional habits.

Empowering our patients

Our preventive nutrition team works with every patient to empower them to make choices that support long-term health and reduce the need for medical interventions. In some cases, advice will extend to other lifestyle factors such as increasing physical activity and quitting smoking.

Our dietitian is an expert in using food and nutrition to promote health and disease management. Translating scientific research into information our patients can understand, they use their knowledge and skills to assess each patient’s individual needs, and plan and conduct individualized nutritional programs to help them lead healthier lives.

Preventive nutrition education

Preventive nutrition is usually led by general dietary recommendations that are realistic and achievable. Focusing on education, we use a variety of tools that are easily understood and acquired.

We help patients in the following areas:

  • Avoiding malnutrition when eliminating foods and losing weight (for both underweight and overweight patients).
  • Correcting false food and diet trends that are ineffective or affect people negatively.
  • Educating on the impact of specific macro and micronutrients in relation to specific diseases and disorders.
  • Learning how to adopt proper eating habits such as the timing of meals and eating patterns.
  • Learning how to make healthier choices, including food shopping advice and understanding food labeling.
  • Lifestyle modifications that support nutrition advice (avoiding a sedentary lifestyle, quitting smoking etc).
  • Providing information on a balanced diet, highlighting each food group and their role in our health.
