Vascular Services

Our experienced team of vascular surgeons, supported by a dedicated team of vascular healthcare professionals, offers a wide range of services for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of vascular conditions, including:

  • Peripheral artery disease: A condition in which the peripheral (meaning away from the heart) arteries become narrow, reducing blood flow to the legs, as well as the arms, stomach, and kidneys. Peripheral artery disease is a risk factor for heart attack and stroke. It is usually caused by atherosclerosis (a build-up of fatty deposits, called plaques, within the arteries).
  • Carotid artery disease: A condition in which the carotid arteries, which supply the head and brain with blood, become blocked. Plaques clogging the carotid arteries increase the risk of stroke, a serious medical emergency in which the brain loses some or all of its blood supply.
  • Aneurysms: An aneurysm is a bulge in the wall of a blood vessel. Aneurysms are caused by conditions that weaken artery walls, such as high blood pressure or atherosclerosis. If an aneurysm ruptures, it can cause bleeding inside the body which is life threatening. An aneurysm that develops in the aorta, the body’s main artery, is called an aortic aneurysm. A cerebral aneurysm occurs in the brain’s blood vessels, abdominal aortic aneurysms affect the aorta in the abdomen, and thoracic aortic aneurysms affect the aorta in the chest.
  • Varicose veins: These are swollen blood vessels that bulge underneath the skin. They usually appear in the lower part of the legs. They occur when the walls of the veins in the legs weaken. As blood pressure within these veins increases, the vein stretches and the valves that prevent blood from flowing backwards stop working properly. This causes the blood to pool in the vessels and become enlarged.
  • Chronic venous insufficiency: Chronic venous insufficiency happens when the veins in the legs become damaged and are unable to manage blood flow properly. It can lead to a range of long-term complications and symptoms that are associated with prolonged venous incompetence, including varicose veins, swelling, heaviness and aching in the legs, skin changes, and leg ulcers.
  • Deep vein thrombosis (DVT): DVT happens when a blood clot forms in a deep vein, usually in the legs. If the blood clot breaks loose, it can enter the blood stream and travel to the lungs. This is called a pulmonary embolism and is a life-threatening condition. DVTs can happen due to damage to a vein, caused by surgery, trauma, infection, or inflammation.
  • Lymphedema: This is a condition in which excess fluid collects in the legs or arms, causing swelling (edema). It happens when the lymphatic system, which is responsible for draining fluids from the body’s tissues, fails. Lymphedema is usually caused by infection, cancer treatments (which remove or damage the lymphatic system) or inflammatory diseases.
  • Vasculitis: A type of autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the walls of blood vessels. The inflammation causes the vessel walls to thicken and narrow, restricting blood flow. This reduces the amount of oxygen and nutrients that are reaching the rest of the body and can lead to organ or tissue damage.
