Vascular Disease Treatment
The Vascular Surgery clinic at Mubadala Health Dubai offers a multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Our vascular surgeons work closely with other specialists, including cardiologists, radiologists, and primary care physicians, to provide coordinated care and a comprehensive treatment plan that is tailored to your specific needs.
The treatment of vascular disease will depend on the cause of the condition. Once our team has made a definitive diagnosis, they will recommend the most effective treatment, based on your individual case. Treatment may include medical management and/or a surgical procedure.
Minimally invasive procedures
Minimally invasive procedures may be performed to improve circulation of the blood in areas of the body where blood flow is restricted or where blood vessels have been damaged.
Our Vascular Surgery clinic specializes in minimally invasive techniques which utilize advanced technology to minimize discomfort, reduce recovery time, and improve outcomes. All surgical procedures are carried out in our state-of-the-art day surgery center, with access to a full anesthetic and nursing team, supported by in-house radiology, laboratory, and pharmacy departments.
We regularly perform advanced, minimally invasive procedures to treat varicose veins, including endovenous laser ablation (also called radiofrequency therapy). Considered the gold standard treatment for varicose veins, this wire-based technology is a non-surgical method that involves sealing damaged veins with high-frequency radio waves or a laser, allowing healthy veins to restore the normal flow of blood. The procedure is performed following an in-depth ultrasound-based assessment, and we offer ongoing follow up to ensure high standards of patient satisfaction
Other minimally invasive vascular procedures include:
- Endovascular surgery: A minimally invasive procedure which is performed inside the blood vessels to remove blood clots and improve blood circulation. The innovative procedure is given to people with a range of vascular conditions, including aneurysms, carotid artery disease, atherosclerosis, and peripheral artery disease. Through tiny incisions, vascular surgeons insert catheters and guide them to the blood vessels under X-ray image guidance.
- Angioplasty and stenting: Performed to open blocked or narrowed vessels when fatty plaques are present. The procedure involves inserting a balloon catheter into the vessel and inflating it at the site of the blockage. This compresses the fatty deposit against the vessel wall. A tiny wire mesh tube (stent) may also be inserted to keep the artery open.
- Sclerotherapy: A common treatment for varicose veins, this involves injecting a sclerosing solution where the varicose veins are present. The solution irritates the blood vessel’s lining, causing it to swell, stick together and form a scar.
- Phlebectomy: A minimally invasive procedure used to remove superficial varicose veins in the leg. Small incisions are made in the skin near the varicose vein, and it is removed via a small hook. The body redirects blood flow to nearby healthy veins.
- Thrombectomy: A procedure to remove a blood clot from an artery or vein. A minimally invasive thrombectomy involves inserting instruments through catheters that can cut or suction out clots from inside the blood vessel.
Medical management of vascular conditions
Medical management of vascular conditions aims to address risk factors and includes things like lifestyle modifications and taking medication.
We offer a range of non-surgical treatments to manage vascular conditions effectively, including:
- Lifestyle changes: Adopting a healthier lifestyle can reduce the risk of vascular disease advancing. This includes changes like losing weight, exercising more, and quitting smoking. Managing blood pressure and lowering cholesterol can also lower the chances of a vascular event happening or returning.
- Medication: A range of medications may be offered to manage vascular conditions, or to address their underlying causes. This includes medications to treat diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure, or to prevent blood clots.
- Observation: Sometimes, routine imaging tests may be offered to monitor the progression of concerns such as aneurysms.
- Compression therapy: Used in people with chronic venous insufficiency or varicose veins, compression therapy aims to increase circulation in the legs. Elastic stockings are worn which help prevent blood from building up, reducing pain and swelling.
