Confirming a vascular diagnosis  

The way vascular diseases are diagnosed may vary by condition, but in general, vascular screening begins with an in-depth discussion about your symptoms, risk factors, and medical history. You will also be asked about any family history of diseases affecting the heart or blood vessels. A physical examination will then be performed, which may include checking your pulse, blood pressure, and listening to your arteries.  

A range of diagnostic tests may be performed, which aim to detect the presence of narrowing or blockages in the blood vessels. The tests used will depend on the specific symptoms and health history, but may include: 

• Angiography: This is a type of X-ray used to view blood vessels. As blood vessels don’t show up on a regular X-ray, angiography uses a contrast agent that is injected into the blood. This dye is highlighted on the X-ray, allowing vascular surgeons to see any problems with the blood vessels. The images produced are called angiograms. Angiography is used to diagnose conditions such as atherosclerosis, peripheral arterial disease, aneurysms and blood clots. Sometimes, imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance or computerized tomography will be used instead of X-ray. 
• Blood tests: These may be used to measure levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. They can also check for diabetes.  
• Ultrasound: Vascular ultrasound allows doctors to see how blood is flowing through the vessels. Also called a duplex study, it uses high frequency sound waves, which create images of the blood vessels and soft tissues. Vascular ultrasound is used to diagnose many conditions, including atherosclerosis, blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, carotid artery disease, aortic aneurysms, and more.
