Our unmatched range of pulmonology services, provided by our expert team of respiratory specialists, aim to improve the health and wellbeing of all our patients, whilst maintaining the highest standard of patient care.

he pulmonology treatment or therapeutic approach provided will depend on the specific diagnosis and clinical situation. All medical decisions are based on individual patient needs and the judgment of our expert pulmonologists.

Pulmonology treatments and therapies may include:

  • Bronchodilator therapy: This is the administration of medications called bronchodilators, which make breathing easier by relaxing the lung muscles and opening the airways (bronchi). It is a treatment for long-term respiratory conditions like asthma and COPD.
  • Oxygen therapy: This therapy involves giving extra oxygen (also called supplemental oxygen) within a healthcare setting, to improve the oxygen level in the blood. It is used to help people with COPD, emphysema, sleep apnea and other respiratory problems.
  • Non-invasive ventilation (NIV): This therapy involves the delivery of oxygen with positive pressure, without the need for intubation (the insertion of a tube into the body). It is offered to patients with both acute and chronic respiratory conditions. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a therapy which delivers a single level of pressure. It does not deliver ventilation but is sometimes used in addition to NIV.
  • Tracheostomy: We offer management and ongoing care to patients who have had a tracheostomy – a procedure in which an opening to the windpipe (trachea) is made and a tube inserted, to help air and oxygen reach the lungs. The patient then breathes through the tracheostomy tube.
  • Airway clearance techniques: We work with patients to educate them on a range of airway clearance techniques. These are breathing exercises that help to release sputum from the lungs. Sputum is the substance produced by the lungs when you have an infection. Removing sputum prevents the lungs from becoming blocked, reduces the risk of an infection and makes breathing easier. Airway clearance techniques include:
  • Chest physiotherapy: Includes using devices, exercises and techniques to make coughing up excess, sticky or thick mucus from the lungs easier.
  • Cough assist: Patients are taught to cough properly, ensuring they clear the lungs and not just the windpipe.
  • Airway clearance devices: For people with chronic lung conditions, devices can assist with the removal of mucus.

Ahead of your appointment at our Pulmonology clinic, please bring the following with you:

  • List of current medications: Please make a list of all the medications you are currently taking, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, as well as any supplements. Make sure you include the dosage and frequency.
  • Symptom journal: Keep a journal of your respiratory symptoms. Try and note the frequency and duration of the symptoms, and any factors that seem to trigger or alleviate your symptoms.
  • Vaccination records: Ensure your vaccinations are up-to-date, particularly if you have respiratory conditions that may put you at a higher risk for certain infections.
  • Previous test results: If you have undergone any relevant tests, such as pulmonary function tests, chest X-rays, or CT scans, bring the results or ensure that they are sent to your healthcare provider in advance of your appointment.
