An anal fistula is an abnormal tunnel that forms between the inside of the anal canal and the skin around the anus. This is an abnormal tract or cavity communicating with the rectum or anal canal by an identifiable internal opening. It often develops after an infection in an anal gland (so called “cryptoglandular gland”) that causes an abscess (a pocket of pus). When that abscess drains or bursts, a small passage may remain, this is the fistula.
Anal fistulas can cause pain, swelling, discharge, and recurrent infections, and rarely heal on their own without medical treatment.
If you have a draining abscess or ongoing discomfort, it’s important to see a Proctologist or General Surgeon or Colorectal surgeon immediately for evaluation. You might need emergency surgery!
