What is Dry Needling?

Dry needling is a technique used by licensed physiotherapists to treat tight bands of muscle or knots that cause pain or restrict movement. Unlike acupuncture, which is based on traditional Chinese medicine, dry needling is grounded in Western medical science and anatomy.

A thin, sterile needle is inserted into the trigger point, causing a local twitch response, which helps release the muscle tension and reduce pain.

How Does Dry Needling Work?

  • The needle stimulates the neuromuscular system, improving blood flow and signaling the body to begin a healing response.
  • It helps "reset" muscle fibers that are contracted or dysfunctional.
  • It can lead to decreased muscle tension, pain relief, and increased range of motion.

Common Conditions Treated with Dry Needling

Dry needling is effective for a wide range of musculoskeletal issues, including:

  • Neck and back pain
  • Shoulder pain and rotator cuff issues
  • Tennis elbow / Golfer’s elbow
  • Hip and gluteal pain
  • Knee pain
  • Calf strain or Achilles tendinopathy
  • Headaches and migraines (tension-type)
  • Sports injuries and overuse injuries
  • Postural problems
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction

Benefits of Dry Needling

  • Rapid pain relief
  • Improved mobility and flexibility
  • Reduces muscle stiffness and spasm
  • Enhances performance and recovery in athletes
  • Complements other physiotherapy treatments (e.g., manual therapy, exercises)
  • Often results in quicker outcomes with fewer sessions

Is Dry Needling Safe?

Yes. when performed by licensed, trained physiotherapists, dry needling is very safe. Common side effects are mild and include:

  • Temporary soreness
  • Slight bruising
  • Fatigue or mild aching

Serious complications are extremely rare.

What to Expect During Treatment

During your session, our physiotherapist will identify the affected muscles and gently insert a sterile needle into the trigger point. You may feel a slight twitch or ache, this is a normal sign that the muscle is responding.

Mild soreness may occur after treatment, like post-workout soreness, and usually fades within 24–48 hours.

Contraindications – When to Avoid

Dry needling may not be suitable for:

  • People with bleeding disorders
  • Individuals on blood thinners
  • Pregnant women (certain areas)
  • Those with needle phobia or severe anxiety
  • Active skin infections at the needle site
