Flu Vaccination

Flu is a serious, contagious illness that can make all children unwell. The flu vaccine is the best line of defense against flu.

Influenza vaccination reduces the risk of your child getting the flu and spreading the virus to friends and family members, such as elderly grandparents who may be at a greater risk. The flu vaccine will also help to prevent kids from getting unwell with flu, so they don’t miss school and family activities.

About the flu vaccine

The flu vaccine contains an inactivated form of the flu virus, which cannot cause illness with the flu. When injected, your body’s immune system responds by making proteins called antibodies to fight the virus. This builds your immunity to flu and you are less likely to catch the virus.

It is recommended that all children receive the flu vaccine each year, except for the following groups:

• Those under 6 months of age
• Children living with chronic health conditions
• Children with allergies to any of the ingredients (always alert your doctor to any known allergies).

Side effects of the flu vaccine

The flu vaccine may cause mild, short-term side effects which should disappear after a few days. It is important to remember that any side effects are far less serious than complications associated with flu. Common side effects include:

• Blocked or runny nose
• Headache
• Muscle ache
• Redness or swelling at the site of injection
• Reduced appetite
