Diagnosis and Treatment
An accurate diagnosis is the first step in developing the most effective and appropriate treatment plan for your child. Our pediatric pulmonary department offers a range of state-of-the-art diagnostic tests for childhood respiratory disorders.
Diagnostic tests in pediatric pulmonology include:
- Allergy testing for allergens causing asthma (skin prick and blood test )
- Blood tests
- Imaging: Chest X ray , Ct scan, Ultrasound, MRI
- Bronchoscopy (a procedure to look into the airways under anesthesia ), including Bronchoalveolar lavage
- Genetic testing
- Pulmonary function testing (PFT): A range of non-invasive tests that can be performed in different ways, depending on the age of the child and the suspected condition, to see how well the lungs are working. Tests include:
- Pulmonary function tests
- Spirometry with pre and post bronchodilator (to assess for reversibility)
- Exercise challenge testing
- Impulse oscillometry
- Full lung volumes ( to asses for restrictive lung disease )
- DLCO (Intersitital lung disease)
- 6 min walk test
- Fit to fly testing
- Methacholine challenge testing (for diagnosis of asthma)
We also offer flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy (FFB). Performed under sedation, FFB allows doctors to see inside the lungs and take biopsies for further investigation, if needed.
