What causes orthopedic conditions?

The cause of an orthopedic condition depends specifically on the problem presented. Some conditions are a result of wear and tear over time, whilst others are due to repetitive overuse or injury or trauma. Some orthopedic complaints have multiple causes, and some are caused by a combination of factors.

Common causes of orthopedic conditions include

  • Wear and tear: Over time, this may cause degenerative changes in our bones, joints, and muscles. This can be painful and limit mobility.
  • Bad posture: Poor posture or movement can add unnecessary stress to our joints, bones or muscles. Over time this can lead to injury and pain.
  • Trauma or injury: Sports injuries, falls and accidents can damage any part of the musculoskeletal system.
  • Overuse: Repetitive movements due to work or sports can lead to damage.
  • Degenerative conditions: Osteoarthritis is a common degenerative condition. Protective cartilage at the end of our bones becomes worn which damages the joints and causes pain.
  • Congenital conditions: Some people are born with orthopedic conditions, such as club foot or scoliosis.
  • Infections: Viral or bacterial infections can lead to inflammation and damage of bones and joints.
  • Inflammatory conditions: Autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis cause inflammation and damage to joints.
  • Metabolic disorders: Osteoporosis is a common orthopedic disease which weakens bones. They are more prone to fractures, leading to orthopedic problems.
  • Neuromuscular disorders: Cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy are disorders which can affect our bone and muscles and result in orthopedic issues.
