Risk Factors for Orthopedic Conditions

Orthopedic Risk Factors

Some orthopedic conditions, like arthritis, are usually age-related and cannot be avoided. However, there are certain risk factors that might increase the chance of other orthopedic conditions developing.

Risk factors for orthopedic conditions include

  • Age: Many orthopedic conditions are more prevalent in the elderly, like arthritis and osteoarthritis.
  • Genetics: Many orthopedic problems are hereditary. This means that if there is a family history of orthopedic conditions in your family, then you may be at a greater risk of developing one.
  • Lifestyle: People who live a sedentary lifestyle, with limited movement and exercise, are at an increased risk of developing conditions like arthritis.
  • Repetitive activities: Performing sports or hand movements such as typing, can put you at an increased risk of orthopedic conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Sports and exercise: While an active lifestyle is one of the best things you can do to boost overall health, if it isn’t done properly or is done without the correct training, it can put pressure on joints and increase the risk of orthopedic injuries.
  • Weight: People who are overweight are at a greater risk of developing arthritis. People who are very slim, with a lower muscle mass, are at a greater risk of developing osteoporosis.
