Early or Delayed Puberty

Are you concerned that your daughter is showing signs of puberty too early, or not at all? Puberty is a major milestone in every girl’s development, and when it happens too soon or too late, it can be confusing and worrying for both children and parents.

What Is Early or Delayed Puberty?

  • Early puberty (precocious puberty) is when a girl starts developing signs of puberty before age 8.
  • Delayed puberty is when there are no signs of puberty by age 13, or when development starts but doesn’t progress normally.

Both conditions can affect a child’s physical growth, emotional well-being, and long-term health.

Early Puberty Symptoms:

  • Breast development before the age of 8
  • Rapid height growth
  • Body odor or acne
  • Pubic or underarm hair
  • Early menstruation – before the age of 10

Delayed Puberty Symptoms:

  • No breast development by the age of 13
  • No menstruation by the age of 15
  • Slower growth or shorter in height than their peers
  • Lack of pubic/underarm hair

Common Causes of Early or Late Puberty

Early Puberty May Be Caused By:

  • Brain-related conditions (affecting the pituitary gland or hypothalamus)
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Obesity
  • Environmental exposure to hormones
  • Genetic factors

Delayed Puberty May Be Due To:

  • Family history of late puberty
  • Chronic illnesses (like diabetes or celiac disease)
  • Eating disorders or excessive exercise
  • Hormonal deficiencies
  • Genetic conditions (like Turner Syndrome)
