Male Urology Diagnosis

Diagnosing male urology concerns

Our Male Urology clinic offers the latest diagnostic technology to accurately diagnose male urological concerns. Diagnostic tests and procedures include

  • Cystoscopy: A procedure that uses a thin camera, called a cystoscope, to look inside the bladder. The cystoscope is inserted into the urethra and then into the bladder. A flexible cystoscope is used for diagnostic purposes, and a rigid cystoscope is usually used if treatment is needed. Cystoscopy is used to find the cause of issues such as frequent UTIs, blood in the urine or pelvic pain. A biopsy can be taken to check for concerns such as bladder cancer.
  • Urine flow studies: Tests used to diagnose lower urinary tract complaints including weak stream, frequent urination, pain when urinating, problems starting urination and problems emptying the bladder. The tests assess the urine flow rates, and the emptying of the bladder. Tests might include:
  • Uroflowmetry: Equipment measures volume and flow rate of urination.
  • Postvoid residual measurement: Ultrasound measures how much urine is left after the bladder is emptied.
  • Urological imaging: We offer a range of imaging tests to diagnose urinary conditions. Ultrasound and computed tomography are often used to guide biopsies to obtain samples for further diagnostic tests. Imaging tests include:
  • Ultrasound: Used to examine the bladder or kidneys, often performed in conjunction with other tests to measure urine flow rate and bladder emptying.
  • Computed tomography (CT): Abnormalities that appear on ultrasound are often investigated further via CT scans. CT scanning is used to assess problems in the urinary tract, particularly when diagnosing and treating kidney stones. If the patient is reporting blood in the urine, a CT scan is given following injection of x-ray dye.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI): Used as a diagnostic tool in many areas of urological radiology.
  • X-ray: Often used in the follow up of kidney stones.
