Prevention

While some dermatological conditions are unavoidable, many concerns can be prevented, or their affects reduced.

You can help to prevent certain, non-infectious skin conditions, such as acne and atopic dermatitis by taking the following preventative steps:

  • Avoid allergens
  • Avoid irritants and strong chemicals coming into contact with the skin
  • Protect your skin from excessive wind, heat, and cold
  • Wash your face daily to avoid bacteria build-up.

Infectious dermatological conditions can be prevented by adopting a healthier lifestyle and practicing good hygiene rules, including:

  • Avoiding contact with anyone with a known infection
  • Eating a balanced diet and drinking lots of water
  • Getting plenty of good quality sleep
  • Never sharing food, drink or personal items or utensils
  • Reducing stress
  • Regularly washing your hands with soap and water.

Skin cancer

Melanoma is one of the most serious skin conditions, but there are things you can do to reduce the risk of it developing. Ultraviolet light is a known risk factor, so avoiding exposure to it can help to prevent the disease. Always:

  • Avoid indoor tanning beds
  • Avoid the sun between 11am and 3pm when its rays are strongest
  • Seek shade whenever possible
  • Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen, with an SPF of at least 15
  • Wear a wide brimmed hat to cover your face, ears, head and neck
  • Wear clothes which cover your arms and legs
  • Wear sunglasses which block UVA and UVB rays.
