Diagnosis & Treatment
Our team of dermatologists in Dubai are experienced in diagnosing a range of skin, hair and nail conditions. We use the very latest diagnostic and imaging tools available, to ensure a quick and accurate diagnosis.
Many dermatological conditions can be diagnosed by examining the skin, hair or nails closely. This might involve the use of a dermascope, a hand-held device which allows the dermatologist to better see the areas of concern.
If further examination is needed to confirm a diagnosis, your dermatologist may request one or more of the following:
- Biopsy: The removal of a small piece of skin for examination under a microscope. A biopsy can be done with a scalpel, razor blade (shave biopsy), or a round cutter (a punch biopsy). The procedure is done using a local anesthetic.
- Scrapings: To diagnose fungal infections, skin scraping involves scraping off material from the skin or nail so it can be examined under a microscope.
- Culture: To diagnose an infection, scrapings or samples are taken and sent to a laboratory, where they are put in a culture medium, which allows any fungi, bacteria or virus to grow and be identified.
- Black light: The skin is exposed to ultraviolet light (called black light) which makes certain bacteria or fungi glow. It can also make the skin’s pigment more visible and allows easier diagnosis of pigmentation issues such as vitiligo.
- Skin tests: Prick tests, patch tests and ‘use’ tests help identify the cause of an allergic reaction. They involve introducing the suspected allergen to the skin to check for a reaction. In a prick test, the substance is punctured into the skin.
Treating dermatology conditions
The Dermatology department at Mubadala Health Dubai treats a range of common skin, hair and nail concerns, as well as many severe or otherwise complex conditions. The team are experienced in the use of the most advanced treatment modalities offering patients the best possible results.
Simple dermatological conditions can often be treated with medicine and lifestyle changes. More severe conditions may require additional treatments, including:
- Biologic drugs: These are medicines made of animal or human proteins. They can be used to treat conditions such as psoriasis, severe atopic eczema and atopic dermatitis.
- Immunosuppressive drugs: These medicines reduce the body’s immune response and prevent it from attacking its own tissue.
- Laser treatment: Lasers are used to reduce the appearance of acne, scars and fine lines. They can also reduce itching and pain.
- Oral retinoids: A strong form of vitamin A, retinoids can treat severe skin conditions.
- Cryotherapy: The use of extreme cold which freezes and removes abnormal tissue, such as skin tags and warts.
- Electrocautery: Also called thermal cautery, this treatment involves a direct or alternating current passing through a wire electrode, which heats up and destroys tissue when applied.
